Gluten Free Halloween Dirt Cups
Gluten free Halloween dirt cups make a spooky dessert that’s perfect for Halloween parties!
Halloween is three weeks away and we are having so much fun in the kitchen testing recipes and snack ideas to get ready for the big day. We have some snack ideas ready to go that include Frankenstein grapes, spider sandwiches, and pumpkin clementines which you can read about in my healthy gluten free Halloween snacks post, and we recently created a pumpkin pie pancakes recipe for breakfast, but we were missing a dessert.
I wanted to find something sweet that would be spooky, but not too frightening since my kids are still in the toddler years. I also wanted to make sure that it would be suitable for little ones that are old enough to eat chocolate but might not be that far along into the texture eating phases since we have friends with kids of all different ages. Dirt cups are a classic dessert that I’ve seen dressed up in many different ways, so I thought they would be perfect. Our twist on Halloween dirt cups takes this fun and festive dessert to a whole new level! It combines my two favorite things – chocolate and almond butter in a healthier gluten free and dairy free version of this classic dessert.
I’m sure it comes as no surprise that we used Barney Butter in our recipe as it’s our favorite almond butter, well actually it’s one of our favorite foods period! The taste, low sugar, healthy ingredients and the added protein boost make Barney Butter a hero in our house. We also used Surf Sweets gummy worms because they’re made from organic fruit juice and have a full serving of Vitamin C in them. For the cookies, we used Glutino chocolate sandwich cookies, and we used Silk dark chocolate almond milk in the recipe.
One of the things I love about this recipe is that even though it has sugar in it and is a holiday splurge, all of the ingredients are non-GMO and the Barney Butter adds a protein boost. Plus, once the chocolate pudding is ready to go, the recipe takes under 5 minutes to prepare and is totally kid friendly. I can tell you from experience that watching my little ones assemble the dirt cups and add in the gummy worms is just as fun as watching them eat them! It’s a great way to get your kids in the kitchen and make some fun Halloween memories together.
Before I get into the recipe, I have to say that I have had the chocolate pudding tested by dairy free and dairy eaters alike and everyone has agreed that this is THE BEST chocolate pudding they have ever had. So, for those of you that don’t want to make the dirt cups or for the little ones that might not be ready for the cookie crunch or gummy worms, don’t miss out on the chocolate pudding portion of it.
Gluten Free Halloween Dirt Cups
- 1/3 cup Barney Butter Smooth almond butter
- 2 cups dark chocolate almond milk
- 1/3 cup coconut sugar
- 2 tablespoons non GMO corn starch
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 6 gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies
- 1 package of gluten free gummy worms
Combine the cocoa powder, corn starch, and sugar in a sauce pan and whisk together.
Add the almond milk and whisk until combined.
Cook on medium high until it boils, stirring constantly so that it doesn't stick to the bottom or clump together.
Once it's boiling, continue to let it cook for 3 more minutes while stirring.
Remove from heat and add the almond butter to the pan. It will melt and you should stir it until it's well combined.
The chocolate pudding mixture will be thicker and ready to chill.
Pour it into a bowl and refrigerate it for a minimum of 3 hours.
Once the pudding is finished, add the gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies to a food processor or blender. We used our Beaba Babycook because it's perfect for small things like this.
Spoon the chocolate pudding into 5 oz. plastic cups.
Next, top the pudding cups with the cookie crumble mixture (your dirt).
The last step is to stick two gummy worms into the cups so that they're sticking out of the top.
